Limahuli National Botanical Garden

Limahuli Gardens

View of the terraced gardens at Limahuli

As you may know the south side of the island of Kauai is considered the dry side. Opposite from Poipu and the Kiahuna Plantation resort is the wetter north shore. It takes about an hour to drive from Poipu and around the east side, through Lihue to the north shore and the destination of Haena.

This is where the Limahuli National Botanical Garden is located. The garden preserve part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden, three of which are found on the Island of Kauai, and encompasses in excess of one-thousand acres of tropical landscape.
The garden and preserve is situated in a most amazing valley and contains three specific ecological zones.

In the late 1990's the Limahuli Garden was chosen as the best natural botanical garden in the U.S. by the American Horticultural Society. Limahuli Garden is definitely worth a visit if you are interested in gardens or the history of the Islands, as the area is also of archaeological interest.
